| After creating your ebook to sell online you need one or
more ebook covers, or graphic representations of
your book (like the one on the left). Although you're not
sending a printed version of the book to anybody, it's
important to give the book a 'physical presence' and allow
the customer to visualise the book they're buying. This
may contradict the old saying, 'You can't judge a book by
it's cover' but we do it all the time! Remember the last
time you went to a bookshop looking for a good thriller?
You looked at the title and the authors name, the book cover, the jacket summary, and decided
to buy. So, ebook covers are important, and creating one
for your book is essential to give it that extra air of professionalism,
and they are known to increase ebook downloads compared to
not having one.
You have a number of choices when creating ebook covers
or box covers. You can create your own ebook cover using a
graphics package. Most come with enough functions for you
to create the book cover front, spine or box top, then rotate them to the
right perspective angle for you to then stitch them
together by hand. If you have a creative talent and
experience with your graphics package this is an
option.
Another alternative is to use a pre-defined ebook cover
template and overlay your own text onto it. However there
are a couple of points to be aware of. You will find it
much easier to create any graphic in a large size first,
then shrink it to the size you want. Many 'free' ebook
cover templates are already shrunk, and it's harder to
overlay small text onto a small graphic. The other problem
you have is that the ebook cover template is already
rotated to give you the 3D perspective. This means you
have to rotate any text to match the perspective angle -
again not easy, and it doesn't always give a good
result, due to the resolution you're forced to work at,
and the perspective chosen by the original cover designer.
However with time, patience and an good knowledge of
your graphics package, it can be done.
An easier alternative is to an ebook cover software
package. This allows you to work on a number of flat
templates (front cover, spine, box top and so on) and then
it does the hard bit of automatically stitching the
components together at the correct perspective angles.
Most software comes with a number of pre-defined flat
templates which are large in size and easier to work on.
If you can't find a suitable template set, it becomes easier to create your own flat templates, then use ebook
cover software to assemble the final ebook covers and give
the right perspective and shadowing. Using a
standard template set, it would take about 10-15 minutes
to create an ebook cover or software box, so I would
recommend this route, rather than wasting time trying to
patch up a small, hard to work on, pre-assembled ebook
graphic.
